Still Surfin' recreates sounds of Beach Boys

By Alison Bunting

CUMBERLAND - Beach Boys fans may want to check out Brewski's Sports Bar & Grill, 1415 River Ave., on March 15 at 9 p.m. when the featured performers will be Still Surfin', a group based in Northern Virginia.
"We try to recreate the early '60s Beach Boys, so we wear the striped shirts and we have the white guitars," said lead singer Matthew Grose.
Most of the group's music is from the pre-1966 Beach Boys, from 1963 to 1966. The first four albums were focused on the surfing, car, and girl songs, he said.
At age 32, Grose wasn't even alive during the Beach Boys hey day.
"They had a big resurgence in the '80s," he said."As far back as I can remember, I loved Beach Boys music because of the harmony."
The original Beach Boys consisted of the three Wilson brothers, Carl, Dennis and Brian, according to Grose. Brian wrote most all the music.
Also in the group were their cousin Mike Love and Brian's friend from high school, Al Jardine.
Grose says ex-Beatle Paul McCartney said Brian Wilson was among the greatest song-writers of all time, and that "Pet Sounds" sounds was McCartney's favorite album.
"He said it was the most beautiful album ever written, and in his words, it totally changed rock and roll," said Grose.
Still Surfin' does not do impressions of the individual Beach Boys. They just concentrate on the music.
"We wear the period outfits for those who have seen the Beach Boys in that era, to take them back. But beyond that, we're still putting on a contemporary show, and trying to be as true to the music as we possibly can," said Grose.
Beach Boys music is "deceivingly complex," said Grose. "Once you try to play it you suddenly realize there's a lot more there than meets the eye... and then it comes into clear picture.
"To have that and something that's part of our American culture and conscience, it make for a really fun show," said Grose.
Tickets are $7. Advance tickets are available. For Further information, call Brewski's at (301) 777-5201. Information about the group is available on the web at www.stillsurfin.com.
